What is ear surgery?
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that can improve the shape, position, or proportion of your ears. Ear surgery can correct defects in the ear structure that were present at birth, as well as those that became apparent with development or were caused by injury. Ear surgery can give your ears a more natural shape and can improve the balance between your ears and your face. Ear surgery is one of the few plastic surgeries that may be recommended for children.
Is ear surgery right for me or my child?
The best way to determine the answer to this question is to meet with a trusted plastic surgeon to discuss your treatment options. The plastic surgeons at CAPS will take the time to get to know your, or your child’s, unique medical history and aesthetic goals before recommending a procedure. If you’re ready to see if ear surgery is right for you or your child, schedule a consultation today.
What should I expect during my consultation?
At CAPS, the satisfaction of our patients is our priority. That’s why we place a great deal of importance on your consultation. The goal of the consultation is to determine if ear surgery is the right choice for you. During your consultation, your doctor will explain the full procedure to you and will ask you several questions, including:
Why do you want ear surgery?
What are your expectations for the procedure?
What is your desired outcome?
Do you have any medical conditions or drug allergies?
Are you currently receiving any medical treatments?
Have you had any previous surgeries? If so, what were they?
In addition to asking these questions, your plastic surgeon will use your consultation to evaluate your general health status and any preexisting health conditions or risk factors you may have, discuss your ear surgery options, examine and measure your ears, take photographs for your medical record, recommend a course of treatment, discuss likely outcomes of ear surgery and any risks or potential complications, and answer your questions.
What should I expect before my ear surgery?
Before your ear surgery, you may be asked to get lab testing or a medical evaluation, take certain medications or adjust your current medications, stop smoking, and avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements that may increase bleeding.
We will also give you special instructions about what to do the night before and morning of your surgery and regarding your post-operative care and follow-up appointments.
What will happen during my ear surgery?
After you have received your anesthesia, you will go to sleep. Your skilled plastic surgeon and well-trained staff will then perform your ear surgery. The particular methods your doctor uses in performing your ear surgery will be determined based on your unique needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will walk you through every step of your ear surgery.
What should I expect after my ear surgery?
Your doctor will give you instructions regarding your post-operative care. Following these instructions is absolutely vital for the success of your surgery. These instructions will include ensuring that your surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during your recovery. Your doctor will also instruct you regarding the proper care of the surgical site, the use of medications to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, and your overall follow-up care. Your relationship with CAPS does not end after your surgery. If you ever have any questions or concerns, we will be here for you.
What will my results be like?
The results of your ear surgery will be long-lasting, and as you heal, you’ll begin to see the fully refined appearance of your new ears. With the skilled plastic surgeons at CAPS, you can be confident that your ear surgery will be performed with the precision that is required to obtain optimal results. We love seeing the increased self-confidence that our patients often enjoy following ear surgery!
