Your Top 5 Liposuction Questions Answered By Dr. Angelos
My name is Dr. Tyler Angelos and I’m a board-certified plastic surgeon at CAPS. I specialize in cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries on the face, body and breasts, with a particular interest in body contouring. I chose to go into Plastic Surgery because I love helping others feel better about themselves. My ultimate goal with any cosmetic procedure is for a natural appearing result that is still you.
After conducting hundreds of liposuction procedures, I often receive many questions from patients who want to know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. In this blog, I’ll be answering some of the most common questions I hear from liposuction patients, from how to prepare for surgery to understanding the different types of liposuction available. Whether you’re exploring your options or ready to take the next step, I hope these answers will help guide you through the process. If you still have questions, schedule a consultation with me and we can sit down one-on-one to discuss in more detail!
What Can I Do As A Patient To Help Prepare For Liposuction Surgery?
In your consultation we’ll talk through a list of some pre-surgery steps that are critical for your health and the success of your surgery. These things will include:
Making sure you’re stopping specific medications before surgery. I’ll provide you with a clear list of what to avoid, and we’ll review your current medications to ensure everything is safe leading up to your procedure.
Making sure your weight is optimized to give you the best possible aesthetic results. If necessary, I’ll offer guidance on how to achieve an ideal weight range before your procedure.
Making sure there’s no nicotine or smoking prior to surgery. Smoking can severely impact your body’s ability to heal, increasing the risk of complications. We’ll go over a timeline for quitting and resources to support you in this process if needed.
By taking these steps, you’re not only setting yourself up for a smoother procedure and recovery but also increasing the likelihood of achieving the best results possible, and we’ll guide you every step of the way.
What’s The Most Important Part Of The Consultation Process?
I feel the most important part of a surgical consultation is the opportunity for the patients to have one-on-one time with their surgeon. This is a crucial opportunity to collaborate and develop a personalized surgical and treatment plan tailored to the patient's needs and goals. You'll also be introduced to the nurses and assistants who will be supporting and caring for you throughout your entire journey.
What sets us apart from other practices is that your entire 30- to 45-minute consultation is dedicated solely to you and your plastic surgeon. Unlike other practices where patients often meet with nurses or coordinators beforehand, at CAPS, you’ll work directly with the surgeon performing your procedure from the start. I believe this is key because, in my experience, when patients are dissatisfied with their results from other practices, it’s often because the wrong procedure was chosen. By sitting down with your surgeon from the outset to build a plan together, you're setting yourself up for the best possible outcome.
What Happens During The Liposuction Procedure?
The main goal is to take away stubborn fat cells in areas that are out of proportion from the rest of the body.
The procedure involves making small incisions in areas that can access the fat. The treatment area is then filled with a saline and local anesthetic solution. An instrument is then inserted to the areas of fat to suction the fat away. Liposuction really is a body contouring procedure rather than a weight loss procedure, although of course you can lose weight with liposuction. The main goal is to reshape your body so that if you experience weight loss or weight gain over the years, you’re still going to have a nice proportion.
What is Recovery Like After Liposuction?
Recovery after liposuction is usually pretty quick. Of course, it’s going to vary a little bit from person to person depending on which areas you’re having treated, and how much liposuction we’re doing. But for the most part, people recover from liposuction within the first few days and are back to normal day-to-day things. In many cases people are even able to go back to work after just a few days.
Expect to see swelling and bruising from liposuction. Most of the time this will resolve in the first two to three weeks, but then there will be residual swelling that will take several months to completely go away. There may be some days where you have a little bit more swelling, and a little bit less swelling. You can expect to see the final results after about six months or so.
